Every organization, no matter how big or small, tend to get sucked into the same monotonous routine or a stale mode of working. Day after day, meetings after meetings, doing the same things, following the same patterns and processes, leading to the same results. This monotony can start to dull even the sharpest minds over time. A sure-fire recipe for stagnancy, a road-block for growth.
Truly quoted by Henry Ford, “If you always do what you’ve always done, you’ll always get what you’ve always got”.
Stagnancy Stinks. The reason why “Innovation” is the next big thing with companies and businesses over the world.
But on the flip side, although many companies think of innovation as a core fundamental value, only a handful truly practice and successfully implement it.
Creativity leads to Ideas, Innovation stems from these ideas, and ideas are deeply rooted in people. To encourage creative thinking that leads to truly unconventional solutions, it is essential to encourage a creative workout to our brains at regular intervals.
Today most of us are a victim of limited thinking. We are too busy following a certain pattern of living, thinking, behaving to actually think we can think something new. While creative thinking may be an innate talent for some, a majority of the workforce struggle with the exercise of thinking outside the box. Organizations need to understand that ‘Out-of-Box’ thinking, a core competency for creating great leaders and managers and a crucial component of the innovation equation, needs to be developed. Creativity requires whole-brain thinking, which is a combination of the right-brain which is the home to imagination, artistry intuition, plus the left-brain, which is filled with logic and planning. All individuals must strive to utilize their brains to the maximum level.
This can only happen if an environment that is conducive is created, to give wings to creative ideas.
It’s a well-known fact that organizations led by creative leaders have a higher success rate in innovation, employee engagement, and being the initiator of change. Welcoming new ideas, finding solutions to problems, and creating something unique – are part of the intellectual capital that gives organization, its competitive edge.
A short case study for your read (Source – www.quora.com)
You are driving down the road in your car on a wild, stormy night, when you pass a bus stop and you see three people waiting for the bus:
An old lady who looks as if she is about to die.
An old friend who once saved your life.
The perfect partner you have been dreaming about.
Which one would you choose to offer a ride to, knowing that there could only be one passenger in your car? Think, before you continue reading.
This is a moral/ethical dilemma. You could pick up the old lady, because she is going to die, and thus you should save her first. Or you could take the old friend because he once saved your life, and this would be the perfect chance to pay him back. However, you may never be able to find your perfect mate again.
The candidate who was hired (out of 200 applicants) had no trouble coming up with his answer. She simply answered: “I would give the car keys to my old friend and let him take the lady to the hospital/home. I would stay behind and wait for the bus with the partner of my dreams.”
This is what I call out of the box thinking.
