The best investment you will ever make is investing in yourself – Warren Buffet
Quality life begins when we realise the importance of investing time and money on self-development. You may ask me why. “I am qualified, able to handle a multitude of things. Why do I have to keep learning? Isn’t that a waste of time? I would prefer to invest my time and money elsewhere. Buy some stocks or shares. Invest in some new device? Go for a vacation? Wouldn’t that be more beneficial? Why do I have to keep learning?
This image says it all.
All the above, would definitely make us feel good and we must do it, but for us to keep doing all the above, shouldn’t we keep upgrading ourselves to be able to achieve more?” Will we go a long way with the knowledge we have when the world and technology is growing by leaps and bounds? Think about it.
Our world is changing at a fast pace. With the advancements in technology, the requirement to match pace with change is very high. Something new happens every day. In all fields. In all areas of life, be it professional or personal. The importance of keeping ourselves updated has taken on a new meaning. Today we cannot sit back and say, “That’s fine, I have finished my education. Now, I don’t need to do anything.”
We all have goals in life – professional and personal. But our main goal is to become better at what we do. Today people are more aware, more educated. Personal development has taken on a new meaning. Everyone wants to live life to the fullest. Success is what everyone wants in life. But success doesn’t come easy, we have to strive for it. One way of accomplishing this is, increasing our self-worth. Our self-worth can be increased by adopting the ‘continuous learning’ philosophy.
Consider our brain as a pot of water. We have to keep emptying the pot and filling it up with new water. If we keep the same water for long, it will get stagnant and rot. Continuous learning enables us to think of better ideas and innovations, which is the requirement of every business today. It helps us succeed in our roles.
Benefit of continuous learning:
Increases Sharpness of Mind and Enhances Skills Constant learning invigorates your mind and helps learn new skills which proves advantageous. Businesses like employees who are updated with the latest knowledge and trends. What worked five years ago is redundant today. Even in the personal sphere, being updated helps make less mistakes and people look up to you. Constant learning is exercise for the brain. Helps keep our brain healthy and mind sharp
Help Fill Skill Gaps Efficiently One of the reasons that training and development of human capital has taken precedence is because, as companies progress and expand over the years, they start experiencing what’s known as “skills gap” with their employee base. For businesses to keep up with the growing changes and cut-throat competition, it becomes mandatory that their personnel are up-to-date with the latest in skill and knowledge, which will help fill the skill gap efficiently.
Help in Gaining a Competitive Advantage Differentiation is the key for all marketing and sales strategies. Products and services have to stand out for people to get interested in buying them. It’s called, having an edge over your competitor. This isn’t easy in today’s chaos and tough times. The only way to get this edge is to upgrade knowledge and skills to enable creativity and find new and different ways in can be adopted.
Improves Self-ConfidenceNobody is born confident. Knowledge, experience and skills increase competence. Competence leads to confidence. It helps you recognize what our strengths are. It helps us visualize what we want to do, where we want to be. Continuous learning helps to upgrade our skills and knowledge thus keeping the confidence factor alive, throughout our lives.
Increases Dexterity and Speed Works on the Psychology of expertise. Speed is the essence of every business. This is a world where deals are cracked within hours, orders are rolled out in minutes and purchases are made in seconds. When you keep learning or improving on a certain skill, it helps you learn and do things faster over a period of time.
There are no speed breakers in the pursuit of learning and developing ourselves. There is no age or gender bar either. Anyone can start, anytime they want. But definitely, the sooner the better, to get that competitive edge, and more. Cause life itself, is in the learning.
Learning experiences are like journeys. The journey starts where the learning is now, and ends when the learner is successful. The end of the journey isn’t knowing more, it’s doing more. — Julie Dirksen, learning strategy and design consultant
