“Will I have people reading my book?” is the first question that pops up when we think of writing a book. And the second is, ‘How do I start’. The WILL and WANT is definitely there, it is the HOW that often dissuades people from following it through.
Does this situation ring a bell? If yes, you are not alone. Many of us have a strong desire to write a book, but have been plagued with a number of ifs and buts, to actually even start one. The fear of rejection, or of not meeting expectations, always dissuades us from taking that first step. And we live with the seesaw emotions of wanting to write, but not being able to do so, all our lives.
Would you believe if I say, become an author, it will change your life. It is a worthwhile endeavour, in many aspects. You grow as a person, you look at the world with a different vision, you become accomplished and you gain financial freedom and recognition. Most of all, you have actually got down and achieved that dream you had all your life. Powerful stuff.
Now here comes the downer. Writing a book is not easy. If you thought it would be difficult, then yes it would be. But NOT IMPOSSIBLE. It takes a lot out of person – perseverance, discipline, time. Once you have written it you have to go through the process of getting it edited, published, marketed and so on. And all these aspects involve strategies. But at the end of this dynamic rainbow, is the pot of gold for you to take. It’s worth it, isn’t it?
The task can be gruelling. Once you start, you may have to make some sacrifices along the way, like less time for yourself or your loved ones, putting in extra hours to finish that interesting chapter, so that the link is not broken, spending time researching material, and so on. But towards the end of all these struggles, what you and your loved ones will experience is, the joy of a dream accomplished.
No pain no gain, as the saying goes. Start with the first chapter, then the next, and the next, and very soon you have your book ready. Yes, to help you with the entire process – pre, during and post process, we have efficient programs designed by accomplished writers who will take you through the techniques of writing a book. AND publishing it! Wouldn’t that be really helpful?
What all goes into writing a book?
Starts with an idea for a story/subject that people would find interesting to read
Choosing a genre
Creating the outline
Writing page by page, chapter by chapter
Getting feedback at various stages of your work
Editing
Rewriting chapters if required
Thinking of a title, writing the synopsis, giving credits wherever and to whoever helped
And eventually publishing and marketing it.
I have made it look so simple. But it could be, once you have made up your mind to write it. Along with proper guidance, writing a book is not that difficult if you have a story or reading material that is interesting.
Being an author gives you a personality that many professions or titles cannot. It adds to your status and helps build a new persona to slowly establish yourself as an expert and role model for others to follow.
For example – Robert Kiyosaki, an American businessman and author, wrote Rich Dad Poor Dad in 1997. This book went on to become the number one personal finance book of all times. Even today, the book sells thousands of copies. Apart from earning international reputation for authoring so many books on finance, Robert Kiyosaki’s company offers workshops, training, and mentorship to individuals and corporates.
“Don’t forget – no one sees the world the way you do, so no one else can tell the stories that you have to tell” —–Charles de Lint
